Code of Practice

The Statistics and Registration Service Act 2007 requires the UK Statistics Authority to:

  • prepare, adopt and publish a Code of Practice for Statistics,
  • re-assess against the Authority’s Code all existing National Statistics designated, and
  • assess against the Authority’s Code any official statistics not currently designated as National Statistics that are proposed by Ministers as candidate National Statistics.

Only those statistics that are assessed as compliant with the Authority's Code of Practice will be designated as National Statistics.

The Act requires the Authority to consult on the content of its Code of Practice and on the principles and procedures that it will adopt in exercising its duty to assess compliance against the Code. A formal 12-week consultation exercise was launched in July 2008, closing on 30 September 2008.
