Statistical Officer (Main Stream) Application Process

1. Complete the application form

Candidates are given the opportunity to demonstrate the key competencies and technical skills on the application form. Please pay particular attention to these skills as applications are marked on them. Use of the accompanying guidance document is strongly recommended.

2. Application form sift

Candidates whose forms score the highest will be invited to attend a board.  Near misses may be considered for a casual contract temporary Statistical Officer post.

3. The StO board

This comprises a 60 minute interview and a 90 minute written test. The test covers knowledge and understanding of statistical and numerate ideas, and the ability to identify the key features of statistical material and then describe these in a clear and logical way to people who do not have a statistical background. The interview will also test analytical and communication skills as well as giving candidates the opportunity to demonstrate the more general competencies. The panel will consider the evidence as a whole to determine whether the candidate has passed the selection process.

Please note, boards will take place in central London or Newport, South Wales.

4. Allocation into a department

Candidates who are successful in their board will then be assigned to a department. Candidates’ department and/or location preference will be considered, but cannot be guaranteed.

Temporary Statistical Officer Selection Process (Casual contract)

Please note, we are not currently recruiting Temporary Statistical Officers.

Applications are circulated by the GSS Recruitment team to departments as vacancies arise. The departments then carry out their own selection processes, normally by interview. Unsuccessful applications will be returned for re-submission to other departments. Please download the same application form as for Statistical Officers and return to the GSS recruitment team.

There is choice at the top of the form to state whether you wish to be considered for a permanent or temporary post (up to 12 months). Candidates who indicate ‘both’ are processed in the StO scheme first.
