Authority Diary - December 2009

The Authority Chair, Sir Michael Scholar addressed the Government Statistical Service Conference for Assistant Statisticians and Statistical Officers on 8 December 2009 and his speech is available on the Authority’s website via the News page.

The Authority Board met in Newport on 11 December. The Board received an update from the National Statistician on the progress of the Census Order through Parliament; considered an outline of the Authority's Annual Report and Accounts for 2009/10; discussed proposals for Authority support to planned Royal Statistical Society (RSS) awards for excellence in the delivery of Official Statistics; and approved publication of the Authority’s Interim Monitoring Report 5 on Barriers to Trust in Crime Statistics. Also at its December meeting, the Board discussed the Authority’s forthcoming Review of the statutory arrangements for pre-release access to official statistics; considered proposals for a future report on improving the communication of the measurement of inflation; received a progress report on the Assessment programme; considered a paper which described the main issues that had emerged from the first phase Assessments; and approved for publication a further seven Assessments reports.

Sir Michael Scholar replied to a letter from David Borrow MP regarding the Census 2011 and a letter from William Cash MP regarding Public Sector Finance and National Accounts statistics. Sir Michael’s replies are available on the website via Reports and Correspondence > Correspondence.

On 17 December the Authority published Monitoring Report 5: Overcoming Barriers to Trust in Crime Statistics: Interim Report. The Authority also published the following Assessment Reports on 17 December:

  • Services Producer Price Indices (Office for National Statistics)
  • Producer Price Indices (Office for National Statistics)

  • Agriculture in the UK and selected crop and livestock statistics (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs)
  • 18 Weeks Referral to Treatment Statistics (Department of Health)
