Authority Diary - June 2009

Following correspondence received during May from the Football Supporters Federation regarding statistics on football spectator safety, Sir Michael Scholar wrote again to John de Quidt, Chief Executive of the Football Licensing Authority on 1 June. Sir Michael was also sent a copy of a further letter from Tim Yeo MP, Chair of the House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee to the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, Rt. Hon. Ed Miliband MP, regarding the reporting of statistics on UK carbon dioxide emissions under the EU Emissions Trading Scheme. The correspondence is available on the Authority’s website under Reports and Correspondence > Correspondence.

The Chair of the Authority, Sir Michael Scholar, accompanied by the National Statistician, Karen Dunnell, visited the Department of Culture, Media and Sport on 22 June. Sir Michael and Karen met with the Permanent Secretary and the head of profession for statistics to discuss the work of the Authority and to hear a series of presentations from DCMS statisticians about their work in the department.

On 24 June the Authority published its first three Assessment reports on Statistics from the National Drug Treatment Monitoring System (National Treatment Agency for Substance Misuse); Recorded Crime in Scotland (Scottish Government); and Statistics on Enrolments in Schools and in Funded Pre-School Education in Northern Ireland (Department of Education, Northern Ireland). These are available on the website under Monitoring & Assessment > Assessment reports.

The Authority Board met in Belfast at the offices of the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency on 19 June. Before the meeting, members of the Board met with NISRA staff and heard a series of interesting presentations about the production of statistics in Northern Ireland. At its meeting, the Authority reviewed the final draft of the Authority’s Monitoring Report on Migration Statistics: The Way Ahead to be published in July; discussed management information, research and the use of official statistics in policy documents, and when the Authority should make interventions on these; and reviewed the draft Assessment reports to be published later in June and in July.

The minutes and papers from the June Authority Board will be published on the Authority website in due course. Minutes and papers of the May Board and previous meetings of the Board are published on the website on the About the Authority > Board and committee documentation pages.
