Authority Diary - March 2010

The Authority Board met on 25 March in London. The Board received a report from the National Statistician about the deliberations of her Consumer Prices Advisory Committee, a report from the ONS Census Director on plans for the 2011 Census, and a report from the ONS Director of Population Statistics on the Beyond 2011 programme. The Board discussed the Authority’s budget for the 2010/11 financial year, proposals for a review of how inflation measures are communicated to the general public, and reviewed the final draft of the Authority’s interim Monitoring Report on Strengthening User Engagement which it approved for publication.

The Board also approved for publication four draft Assessment reports on Emissions Statistics, Council Tax Levels set by Local Authorities, Wales Labour Market Statistics, and UK Labour Market Statistics.

The minutes and papers from the March Authority Board meeting will be published on the Authority website in due course. Minutes and papers of the February Board and previous meetings are published on the website on the About the Authority > Board and committee documentation pages.

The Authority’s Committee for Official Statistics also met in March. The Committee discussed the work of a Government Statistical Service taskforce to improve the presentation of statistics, and reviewed engagement by the Authority with the Devolved Administrations and legislatures. The draft interim Monitoring Report on Strengthening User Engagement was reviewed and remitted to the Authority Board for further consideration. The Committee also discussed the findings of a recent survey of Public Confidence in Official Statistics conducted by NatCen in 2009.

An updated version of the Authority Issues Log was published at the end of March. The issues log lists those issues raised with us, a number of which have resulted in the Authority undertaking further investigations. The Issues Log is available on the website under Reports and Correspondence > Issues Log.

In March, the Authority published its Monitoring Report reviewing the UK’s statutory arrangements for pre-release access to statistics, and the interim report on Strengthening User Engagement. On 30 March, the Authority published a statement on its future policy priorities for UK official statistics. Links to these are available on the website on the News page.
