General Register Office for Scotland (GRO(S))
The General Register Office for Scotland (GRO(S)) is a Non-Ministerial Department, part of the Scottish Administration.
GRO(S) are responsible for information about Scotland’s people, principally:
- overseeing the registration of births, marriages, deaths and other vital events
- providing key family history information to the public
- running the Census
- providing a population register for use by the National Health Service (NHS) and local authorities, and
- using Census and other data to provide statistics about present and likely future populations and households
