HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC)

Statisticians in HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) work in the Knowledge, Analysis & Intelligence Directorate (KAI). KAI contains professional analysts from the four numerate disciplines: statisticians, economists, operational researchers and social researchers. KAI is responsible for analytical services and knowledge management services which identify, build upon and share HMRC's knowledge to help deliver evidence-based tax policy, customer service improvements, and improved departmental efficiency. This is achieved by multidiscipline teams working closely with operational and policy colleagues within HMRC and HM Treasury. In addition, KAI is responsible for collecting, analysing and disseminating trade-in-goods statistics, which includes the administration of the Intrastat system for collecting information on the movement of goods within the European Union (EU).

The Department publishes many National Statistics on taxation, and a variety of derived statistics pertaining to the tax base - personal and corporate incomes, personal wealth and property transactions. It also publishes the detailed monthly trade statistics. KAI provides other Government Departments and Eurostat with key data, which underpins such outputs as the National Accounts and Balance of Payments.
