Welsh Assembly Government (WAG)
Statisticians in the Welsh Assembly Government work primarily in the Statistical Directorate (SD), a centralised statistical division organised into specific subject area teams. In addition to statistical staff it includes the Assembly’s Cartographic branch.
SD is part of the wider Corporate Information Services Department alongside Business Information and Information and Knowledge Management Divisions. Some statistics are also produced within other parts of the Assembly - for example Local Government Finance and parts of Education, but with professional accountability to the Chief Statistician.
They produce statistical information across a wide range of topics covering all aspects of Welsh life including population, health, housing, education, training, agriculture, industry, the economy, local government finance, transport, the environment and the Welsh language. In doing this they commission surveys and carry out their own data collection and make use of statistics compiled by other government departments and other bodies.
