First Assistant Secretary, Macro Planning of Department of National Planning & Monitoring (Government of Papua New Guinea)
From 2005-2016 Maria was Assistant Secretary Statistics & Research at the Department of National Planning & Monitoring of Papua New Guinea, after holding the position of Senior Systems Analyst for 5 years.
Part of Maria’s efforts to improving statistics for development in PNG is the recent launch by the Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea of the PNG Strategy for the Development of Statistics (PNGSDS) 2018-2027 to improve the National Statistical System in Papua New Guinea.
Maria is now DNPM’s First Assistant Secretary for the Macro Planning Division and since last year, coordinated the formulation of the new Medium Term Development Plan 2018-2022. Maria is a strong advocate of good statistics for policy and decision making, as well as Monitoring & Evaluation having worked with the key policy and planning Department and very closely with PNG’s National Statistical Office, for the past 18 years. Evidence based policy and decision making have been a challenge for the the PNG Government for almost all sectors of the country’s development agendas since PNG’s independence in 1975.
With an undergrad in Statistics, Maria is a Mathematical Sciences post graduate of the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia.
