Chief Statistician at the Department for International Trade
Tom is passionate about the use of statistics to navigate policymakers through difficult decisions and promoting the value that Government statisticians can add by “telling the story” through analysis. Tom started working as a statistician at the Office for National Statistics (ONS) researching the addition of housing costs into the Consumer Price Index on an internationally comparable basis. Tom has worked to develop economic and regional statistics, implementing the recommendations of the “Allsopp Review of Statistics for Economic Policymaking”, a joint Bank/Treasury/ONS review led by former MPC member Chris Allsopp.
To implement one of the recommendations, Tom was part of the team that set up a network of ONS Regional Statisticians across England. He put theory into practice by working as the ONS London Regional Statistician alongside Greater London Authority (GLA) Economics. More recently Tom has been the Head of Profession for Statistics at the Dept for Culture, Media and Sport, leading policymakers and industry through updated measurement of the Creative Industries, and Chief Statistician at the Ministry of Defence.
